Our Church Family History

Our church family, Northglenn United Methodist Church, was started in 1962 by a number of families who resided in or near the newly developed suburban city of Northglenn. They contacted officials of the Rocky Mountain Conference of the Methodist Church and requested that a Methodist Church be established in their area. The Denver church Extension Mission Service assisted by purchasing a parsonage and an extra lot at 1481 W. 106th Avenue and by providing the salary of an appointed pastor.

Rev. William L. Young blood was the first pastor to be appointed to the new fellowship. He held the first services in his living room in the new parsonage on December 2, 1962. Fifty-four people became the charter members of a new Methodist Church in Northglenn on Sunday, January 6, 1963. Services were held in a portable sanctuary on the vacant lot; Warren, Grant Avenue, Park Hill and Christ Methodist Churches donated hymnals; and the pulpit was borrowed from a local mortuary.

In 1964, ground was broken for the first church building at 1551 West 106th Avenue. This building was consecrated on the 16th of May 1965. Also in 1965, Rev. Noble Blackman retired to Northglenn and began assisting in the work of the growing church. In 1967, he was appointed as minister of visitation, a position that he held until his resignation in 1973.

Northglenn has had an interest in education of children since early in their history. In January 1969, a parochial preschool was started with twelve children. This school has subsequently become a state licensed institution with more than one hundred twenty students 18 month to 5 years of age.

The Rocky Mountain Conference transferred Rev. Youngblood in June of 1969, and a new pastor, E. Russell Brown, was appointed to serve Northglenn. The church continued to grow with the leadership of Rev. Brown, and in 1972, ground was broken for a new sanctuary to be located at 1605 West 106th Avenue. Under Rev. Brown’s tenure, we added a church secretary, Frances Haddock, in 1971, and an assistant pastor, Dave Woodward, in 1973.

In 1977, the annual bazaar of the United Methodist Women became a "Festival of Trees," a magical display of one-of-a-kind gifts displayed around Christmas trees with exquisite handmade ornaments, which was an annual celebration until the late 1980’s. A Parent’s Day Out program was started in 1982, for mothers of preschoolers.

The church continued its strong growth through 1980’s with the leadership of Rev. Ron Hodges. Ron saw the expansion of the church building at 1605 W. 106th. This remodeled building was dedicated in 1985. The church changed in many ways at this time. Carol Duffy became church secretary in 1981. We added a Director of Christian Education. And in time, student assistants were also a part of the church programming staff. Rob White ably served us; our first fully trained and experienced Associate Pastor. Part-time positions in Bookkeeping, Finance and Choir Direction also increased the staff during these years.

Most recently, under the capable leadership of Rev. Don Schlichting, the 1605 W. 106th Avenue property was remodeled once again to include a Gathering Room and Bell Tower. The changes made enhanced the properties appearance; made our outlook toward the neighborhood much more hospitable and set the stage for future growth. During his tenure, Dr. Schlichting began the Disciple Bible Studies; started the Stephen Ministries program and encouraged the growth of lay ministries in the church.

The year 2000 saw yet another change for Northglenn United Methodist Church, as the Rocky Mountain Conference announced the appointment of Northglenn’s first woman senior pastor, Rev. Jane Y. Riecke. Pastor Jane, as she is known, brought great enthusiasm and energy to ministries of Northglenn UMC.

In 2007 we welcomed Reverend Jim Harris as our Senior Pastor.
