Mission Trips

Sager Brown, Baldwin, LA Feb 24-Mar 7, 2008.  This has been a great experience, learning about the Mission outreach of Sager Brown and learning about Cajun Life.  Sager Brown has a wide range of opportunities for all walks of life including packing health and school kits, campus maintenance and assistance to the needy of the greater area.

Sager Brown Mission Report

Twelve members from the Church worked at UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin, LA , in late February and early March, most worked two weeks.  The work included making kits (school, layette and medical), sewing and cutting in the new sewing room, loading a 40 foot container for shipment and numerous other tasks around the campus.

Loading the container was a high light since this was the first time any of us had seen the process for an overseas shipment.  Five teams were assembled and one team went in the container to unload the palette and stack the boxes.  Then the next team repeated the process.  There were 46 pallets loaded containing 2,688 health kits and 14,233 school kits.  The container was then sealed and hauled to port for shipment to Sudan.  The area of Sudan the shipment was going is in such chaos there was no assurance the container could be returned so UMCOR had to buy the container in the event it would not be returned.

The Depot was experiencing a shortage of donated items (pencil sharpeners, tooth brushes, etc), so some days we were limited to the number of kits we could prepare.  UMCOR therefore has to purchase items to make up the kits.  Some of us assisted with setting up the inventory.  According to staff members money is available to buy items.

The trip was not all work, some side trips were taken including a visit of a plantation and a ride n Cajun Man’s boat for a trip into the swamp.  This trip allowed us to see alligators in the wild and an eagle with an eaglet outside of the nest.  The Cajun man put a piece of chicken meat on the water near the boat and the eagle flew in, picked the meat up and took to the eagle.

We delivered the school bags and fabric sent by our church.

The members who went : Smith (Bill & JoAn), McClintock (Bill & Brigitte), Koehn (Earl & Sue), Huckins (Bob & Sharon), Eastom (Fred & Nedra) and Ashmore (Wayne & Carol).

We have scheduled March 8- 19, 2009 and February 14- 25, 2010 for our future Mission trips to Sager Brown.  If you would like to participate in this ministry contact Wayne & Carol Ashmore.

Your participation in the Sager Brown Mission is encouraged and welcome.

McCurdy School, Espanola, NM June 29-July 3, 2008.  Since 1912 this has been an outstanding school utilizing volunteer help to operate.  Much of the work is campus maintenance both light and heavy.  There are opportunities however for everyone with label cutting, packaging and other tasks.  Families and youth would enjoy this Mission.

Mission work is becoming more popular, dates are becoming more difficult to obtain, we are to the point that we need to book 2 & 3 years in advance.  With this in mind your interest of involvement would be appreciated to help the booking process.
